(JACKSON, MS) — The Mississippi Recycling Coalition (MRC) recently held its annual conference in conjunction with the Southeast Recycling Development Council’s Recycling Summit 2008 in Point Clear, AL. During the conference, the Mississippi Recycling Coalition and the Beverage Association of Mississippi awarded four, $750 scholarships to students at Mississippi public or private colleges and universities who are enrolled in disciplines related to recycling and environmental management. These scholarships are available to currently enrolled freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

This year, MRC received 19 applications for the scholarships. This year’s applicants were all well-qualified. As sponsors of these scholarships, the MRC and Beverage Association of Mississippi strive to reward students based on scholastic achievement, the personal need of the applicant, the applicant’s major and interests as related to recycling and other environmental issues, strength of recommendations, and professional appearance of applications. The Mississippi Recycling Coalition is pleased to announce this year's scholarship recipients:

  • Jaimee Nan Jones — Ms. Jones is from Louisville, MS and is the daughter of Glenn and Renee Jones. She is majoring in Biological Engineering at Mississippi State University where she has a 3.78 GPA.

  • Christopher L. Magee — Mr. Magee is from Brandon, MS and is the son of Danny and Linda Magee. He is majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries at Mississippi State University where he has a 4.00 GPA.

  • Maggie Savely — Ms. Savely is from Pontotoc, MS and is the daughter of Jack and Sandra Savely. She is majoring in International Studies/Environmental Education at the University of Mississippi where she has a 3.50 GPA.

  • Jennifer Williams — Ms. Williams is from Raymond, MS and is the daughter of Greg and Lise′ Williams. She is majoring in Agriculture Business with an environmental emphasis at Hinds Community College where she has a 3.50 GPA.

Interested students are encouraged to apply for the 2009 MRC scholarship awards. The Mississippi Recycling Coalition is a consortium of recycling companies, local governments, state agencies, and other interested organizations in the State of Mississippi. The MRC Conference is held annually to provide recycling education on various issues to the MRC membership.
